Grapefruit is cold pressed from the peel, using fruit grown in the United States. Much of it comes from grapefruit that wasn't quite good-looking enough for the fresh fruit counter — bruised or misshapen but perfectly fine for pressing — so the oil is very much a by-product of the juice industry rather than grown for its own sake.
The aroma is bright and tangy, sweeter and less bitter than the fruit itself, with none of the pith flavour you get biting into a real grapefruit. It's an instantly recognisable breakfast-table scent, concentrated into something closer to a zesty citrus lift than an actual fruit smell.
