Lavender is the bottle most people reach for first, and the one that runs out fastest. The aroma is soft and floral with a green, herbaceous edge — familiar enough to feel calming, but far more rounded than the lavender scent of household products.

It earns its place in the evening. A few drops in a diffuser an hour before bed changes the feel of a room, and diluted in a carrier oil it works into a simple hand or shoulder routine at the end of the day.

It is also the easiest oil to blend with. Lavender softens sharper oils and sits comfortably underneath citrus, woods and herbs, which makes it a forgiving place to begin experimenting.

Why people choose it

  • Soft floral aroma with a fresh, herbaceous edge
  • The most versatile bottle in a starter collection
  • Blends easily with citrus, woods and other florals
  • A natural fit for evening and bedtime routines
  • Widely used in perfumery and traditional aromatherapy

How it smells

Soft, floral and powdery, with a green herbal note underneath and a faint sweetness as it settles.

How to use it

In a diffuser
Add three to four drops to a diffuser in the evening, or put a drop on a tissue tucked beside a pillow.
On skin
Dilute with a carrier oil and work into wrists, shoulders or the back of the neck as part of a wind-down routine.
Dilution
One drop of Lavender to four drops of fractionated coconut oil for general topical use.
Worth knowing
Start with less than you think. Lavender is easy to overdo, and a lighter hand reads as more pleasant.

Common questions

Is Lavender a good first essential oil?

It is the one we suggest most often. The aroma is familiar, it blends with almost everything else, and it suits both diffusing and diluted topical use, so a single bottle covers a lot of ground.

How long does a 15ml bottle last?

Roughly 250 drops. Diffusing three or four drops most evenings, expect somewhere around two months from one bottle.

What does it blend well with?

Cedarwood and Frankincense for something grounding in the evening, or Bergamot and Wild Orange for a lighter, fresher mix.

How should I store it?

Upright, with the cap on, out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. The amber glass protects the oil, but heat and light are what shorten its life.
