Tea Tree comes from the leaves of a small paperbark tree native to the east coast of Australia, where it has been steam distilled for generations. The aroma is sharp and green with a woody, almost leathery edge — instantly recognisable, and not to everyone's taste on its own.
Most people do not diffuse it purely for the scent. A drop goes into a facial cleanser before an evening wash, or onto a cotton pad and over the nails after a shower. It turns up in the cleaning cupboard just as often as the bathroom cabinet, stirred into a spray bottle of water for wiping down counters and taps.
On its own the aroma is strong, so plenty of people prefer it blended — Lavender softens the edge, and Lemon or Wild Orange lifts it into something easier to live with. A little goes a long way, however you use it.

How to use it

What does Tea Tree smell like on its own?
Sharp and green, with a woody, leathery edge rather than anything floral. It reads more like a herbal cleaning cupboard than a perfume, which is why most people blend it rather than diffuse it neat.
Can I use it neat on my skin?
We would not recommend it. Dilute with a carrier oil first — Tea Tree is potent enough that neat use can bring on sensitivity for some people, and a diluted drop is usually kinder to skin.
Is Tea Tree the same as the Melaleuca I see on some skincare labels?
Yes — Melaleuca is simply the botanical name, and some brands use it instead of Tea Tree on the label. Ours is the pure single oil, so it is stronger than a pre-diluted skincare product and needs diluting yourself.
How should I store it?
Upright, cap on, away from direct sunlight and heat. Tea Tree is fairly stable, but light and warmth will still shorten its life over time.
