Eucalyptus smells like cold air. It is sharp and camphorous with a green, woody base, and it carries further through a house than almost anything else on the shelf.

Most people use it in the morning, or in a bathroom where the steam pushes the aroma around. It is a common choice for the colder months, when a room has been shut up and needs opening out.

It is not a subtle oil. One or two drops is plenty, and it dominates a blend unless you keep it well back behind softer notes.

Why people choose it

  • Cool, bracing aroma with real carrying power
  • A seasonal favourite through autumn and winter
  • Works well in bathrooms and steamy rooms
  • Pairs naturally with mints and other woods
  • A small amount scents a large space

How it smells

Sharp and camphorous, cool at the front, drying to a green woody note.

How to use it

In a diffuser
One or two drops in a diffuser. In a bathroom, a drop on the shower floor away from the direct stream lets the steam carry it.
On skin
Dilute well with a carrier oil. Keep it away from the face, and away from young children entirely.
Dilution
One drop of Eucalyptus to five drops of fractionated coconut oil.
Worth knowing
Because it carries so far, use less than feels right. It is easy to make a whole floor of a house smell of it.

Blends well with

Common questions

How many drops of Eucalyptus should I diffuse?

One or two. It has more carrying power than most oils, so a small amount scents a large room and more than that quickly becomes overpowering.

What does Eucalyptus blend well with?

Peppermint and Rosemary for something sharp, or Lavender and Cedarwood if you want to soften it and give it a base to sit on.

Can I use it in the shower?

A drop on the shower floor, away from the direct water stream, lets the steam carry the aroma. Do not apply it to skin in the shower — hot water increases sensitivity.

Is it safe around young children?

Keep it away from the faces of young children and diffuse only in a well-ventilated room they can leave. Check the label and speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are unsure.
