This isn't a neat essential oil in the usual sense. Vanilla pods don't give up their aroma through steam distillation the way flowers or peel do, so doTERRA grinds the cured pods and uses a pressurised CO2 process to draw out the absolute, then dilutes it in fractionated coconut oil so it pours like the rest of the range.

The pods come from Madagascar, still the source of most of the world's vanilla, and the aroma is exactly what you'd expect from the bottle it comes from — rich, warm and sweet, with none of the thin, one-note character of a synthetic vanilla fragrance.

Because it's already diluted and quite concentrated, a drop or two is usually enough, whether that's added to a diffuser blend or worked into an unscented lotion.

Why people choose it

  • Rich, warm vanilla aroma, unmistakably the real thing
  • Extracted from Madagascan vanilla pods using a CO2 process
  • Pre-diluted in fractionated coconut oil, ready to use
  • A little goes a long way in both diffuser and skin blends

How it smells

Rich, warm and properly sweet, with the depth of a real vanilla pod rather than a one-note fragrance.

How to use it

In a diffuser
A drop or two alongside a citrus or wood oil softens both and adds a sweet, warm base note.
On skin
Apply directly, or blend a drop into an unscented lotion — it's already diluted in fractionated coconut oil.
Worth knowing
It's concentrated, so start with less than you think you need, especially in a small diffuser.

Common questions

Is this a neat essential oil like Lavender or Peppermint?

Not quite. Vanilla pods are processed with pressurised CO2 to draw out the aroma, then that absolute is pre-diluted in fractionated coconut oil, so the bottle you receive is already diluted.

Do I still need to add a carrier oil?

No, it's ready to use as it comes. Just remember it's concentrated, so a drop or two is usually plenty.

What does it smell like?

Rich, warm and properly sweet — the depth of a real vanilla pod rather than a thin, synthetic vanilla fragrance.

What does Vanilla blend well with?

Citrus oils such as Wild Orange for something warmer, or woods like Sandalwood for a deeper, rounder base note.
