Lemongrass is citrus without the fruit. It is grassy and green with a lemon-sharp top, closer to the smell of a herb garden than a fruit bowl, and it is one of the most distinctive things you can put in a diffuser.

It suits kitchens and utility spaces, and it is a common choice in the summer when a house needs something fresher than a floral. It also blends unexpectedly well with woods, where the grassiness stops the mix turning sweet.

It is one of the more affordable bottles, which is why it tends to be used generously.

Why people choose it

  • Grassy, citrus-sharp aroma with real character
  • One of the better-value bottles to diffuse often
  • Cuts through cooking smells in a kitchen
  • Blends well with woods, mints and other citrus
  • A summer alternative to sweeter florals

How it smells

Green and grassy with a bright lemon top note and a faintly earthy finish.

How to use it

In a diffuser
Three drops in a diffuser, or two alongside a wood such as Cedarwood to round it out.
On skin
Dilute with a carrier oil. Lemongrass is one of the more sensitising oils, so use a weaker dilution and patch test first.
Dilution
One drop of Lemongrass to five drops of fractionated coconut oil, and patch test before wider use.
Worth knowing
It is strong-smelling for its price, so start with less than you would use of a citrus peel oil.

Common questions

Is Lemongrass the same as Lemon oil?

No. Lemon is cold-pressed from citrus peel and smells like the fruit. Lemongrass is distilled from a grass and is greener, sharper and more herbal.

What does Lemongrass blend well with?

Cedarwood and Vetiver to ground it, Peppermint for a sharper mix, or Wild Orange if you want the citrus side brought forward.

Why does it need a weaker dilution than other oils?

Lemongrass is more likely than most to irritate skin. Use a lower ratio and patch test on a small area before applying more widely.

Where is it most useful in the house?

Kitchens and utility rooms. The grassy sharpness cuts through cooking smells better than a sweet floral does.
