Fennel is steam distilled from the seed of Foeniculum vulgare, a tall, feathery-leaved herb in the carrot family that's grown across parts of Europe. The seed itself already carries most of the aroma before it ever reaches a still, which is part of why the oil smells so true to the plant.

The smell is sweet and distinctly anise-like, with a warm, herbaceous body underneath that keeps it from reading as one-note liquorice. It sits closer to a spice-rack aroma than a garden herb, with enough sweetness to soften into a blend rather than dominate it.

A drop or two in a diffuser works well alongside citrus or other seed and spice oils, and it takes to topical blending in much the same way — diluted well and used as part of a wider blend rather than on its own. This bottle is for aroma and blending only.

Why people choose it

  • Sweet, distinctly anise-like aroma with a warm, herbaceous body
  • Steam distilled from the seed of Foeniculum vulgare
  • Grown across parts of Europe
  • Softer and sweeter than most spice-rack oils, so it blends easily
  • Pairs well with citrus and other seed oils in a diffuser blend

How it smells

Sweet and anise-like, with a warm, herbaceous depth underneath that keeps it rounder than a straightforward liquorice note.

How to use it

In a diffuser
Two to three drops in a diffuser, blended with a citrus oil or another seed and spice oil such as Coriander.
On skin
Dilute well with a carrier oil before applying — it works best as part of a blend rather than on its own.
Dilution
One drop of Fennel to four drops of fractionated coconut oil for topical use.
Worth knowing
This is an aroma and blending oil rather than a kitchen ingredient — it's used here for scent alone.

Common questions

What does Fennel essential oil smell like?

Sweet and distinctly anise-like, with a warm, herbaceous body that stops it from reading as one-note liquorice.

Is this bottle meant for cooking or flavouring food?

No — this is an aroma and blending oil for diffusers and topical scent, not a food ingredient.

What does it blend well with?

Citrus oils lighten it, and other seed or spice oils such as Coriander give it more depth for an autumn blend.

How many drops should I use in a diffuser?

Two to three is a good starting point, blended with something else rather than diffused alone.

Where is doTERRA's Fennel grown?

Across parts of Europe, where the plant is originally native and still widely cultivated.
