Copaiba comes from several Copaifera tree species native to South America. The oleoresin is tapped from the trunk in a similar way to how maple syrup is collected, then steam distilled to produce the finished oil — an unusual harvesting method among doTERRA's single oils.

The aroma is much quieter than most resin oils: woody and faintly sweet, almost powdery, without the heavier, incense-like weight of Frankincense or Myrrh. It sits in the background of a blend rather than announcing itself.

Because it is so mild, it suits people who find other resins too heavy, whether diffused on its own or added underneath a citrus or floral oil. It is also diluted into topical blends as a soft base note that does not compete with whatever else is in the mix.

Why people choose it

  • Mild, woody-sweet aroma, softer than most resin oils
  • Tapped from the trunk of the Copaifera tree, much like maple syrup
  • Steam distilled from the collected oleoresin
  • A quiet base note that sits underneath rather than leading a blend
  • A gentler alternative to heavier resins like Frankincense or Myrrh

How it smells

Soft and woody with a faint sweetness, almost powdery — quieter and lighter than Frankincense or Myrrh.

How to use it

In a diffuser
Add two to three drops to a diffuser, on its own or underneath a citrus or floral oil.
On skin
Dilute with a carrier oil and use as a gentle base note in a topical blend.
Dilution
One to two drops of Copaiba to four drops of fractionated coconut oil for topical use.
Worth knowing
It is one of the mildest resin oils, so it suits anyone who finds Frankincense or Myrrh too heavy.

Common questions

What does Copaiba smell like?

Soft, woody and faintly sweet, almost powdery — much lighter than resin oils like Frankincense or Myrrh.

How is Copaiba harvested?

It is tapped from the trunk of the Copaifera tree in a similar way to maple syrup, and the collected resin is then steam distilled.

What does it blend well with?

It sits quietly under citrus oils such as Wild Orange, or alongside other woods and resins without overpowering them.

How many drops should I use in a diffuser?

Two to three is a good starting point — it is a mild oil, so it will not dominate the room even at that strength.

How is Copaiba different from Frankincense?

Both are resin-based oils, but Copaiba is lighter, sweeter and quieter, while Frankincense is heavier and more overtly woody.
