Arborvitae comes from Thuja plicata, also known as Western Red Cedar, a large conifer native to the Pacific Northwest of Canada and the United States. doTERRA distils the oil from heartwood left over from other wood production, rather than felling trees specifically for the oil.

The aroma is warm, earthy and woody, deeper and less sharp than Cedarwood, with a slightly resinous quality that lingers. It's a solid, grounding base note rather than something that announces itself from across a room.

A few drops in a diffuser work well underneath a citrus or floral blend, giving it a warm, woody foundation. Diluted into a carrier oil, it also makes a simple addition to a hand or wrist routine, and a little goes a long way as a base note.

Why people choose it

Two to three drops in a diffuser, layered underneath a citrus or floral oil as a base note.
On skin
Dilute with a carrier oil before applying to the wrists as part of a blend.

Common questions

What does Arborvitae smell like?

Warm, earthy and woody, with a slightly resinous depth — deeper and less sharp than Cedarwood.

Is Arborvitae the same as Cedarwood?

No — they're different species. Arborvitae comes from Thuja plicata, also known as Western Red Cedar, and has a warmer, more resinous character than Cedarwood oils.

How is doTERRA's Arborvitae sourced?

From heartwood left over from other wood production, rather than trees felled specifically for the oil.

What does it blend well with?

Citrus oils such as Lemon or Wild Orange brighten it, while it also sits well underneath florals as a woody base.

Is it a strong aroma?

It's a background note rather than a bold one, so it works best layered into a wider blend rather than used alone.
