Vetiver is extracted from the root of Vetiveria zizanioides, a deep-rooted grass grown mainly in Haiti. Unlike a leaf or flower oil, the root is tough enough that doTERRA draws the oil out through hydro-diffusion, a slower, steam-based process suited to root material.

The aroma is earthy, smoky and woody, with a faint caramel-like sweetness underneath — one of the heaviest, deepest aromas in the range. It sits right at the base of a blend rather than the top, and it lasts a long time on skin once applied.

Because of that weight, a couple of drops go a long way. People often add it as a base note to an evening diffuser blend, or apply it diluted with a carrier oil as part of a bedside routine.

Lighter oils such as Lavender or Wild Orange, which sit on top of Vetiver's heavier base note.

When do people usually use it?

Often in the evening, as a base note in a diffuser blend or a bedside routine.
