OnGuard blends Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamon Leaf, Eucalyptus and Rosemary into one bottle. It is one of doTERRA's best-known blends, and it smells like a well-stocked spice rack — clove and cinnamon lead, with wild orange underneath and a clean lift from eucalyptus and rosemary.

The aroma is warm and spiced, closer to mulled wine or a Christmas market than a typical essential oil. Around the home, a few drops go into a spray bottle of water for wiping down surfaces, or into a laundry wash that needs a lift.

In a diffuser it fills a room quickly, so it needs fewer drops than most oils — start with one or two rather than four. It is a good one to reach for when a house has been shut up for a while and could use a warm, spiced aroma back in it.

Why people choose it

  • Warm, spiced aroma — clove and cinnamon to the front, lifted by wild orange
  • A regular in DIY surface sprays and laundry
  • Fills a room quickly, so a little goes further in a diffuser
  • Blends Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamon Leaf, Eucalyptus and Rosemary
  • A warming favourite around the home through autumn and winter

How it smells

Warm and spiced, cinnamon and clove to the front, brightened by wild orange with a clean edge from eucalyptus and rosemary.

How to use it

In a diffuser
Start with one to two drops in a diffuser — it is stronger than most blends and fills a room fast.
On skin
Dilute well with a carrier oil before applying to skin, or stir a drop into a hand-washing routine.
Dilution
Dilute generously — start at one drop of OnGuard to four or five drops of fractionated coconut oil, more for sensitive skin.
Worth knowing
A little goes further than you would expect. Build up slowly rather than matching the drop count you would use for a lighter oil.

Common questions

What's actually in OnGuard?

Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamon Leaf, Eucalyptus and Rosemary — six oils in one bottle, which is why the aroma is so layered.

Can I add it to a homemade cleaning spray?

Yes, that is one of the most common uses — a few drops in a spray bottle with water, plus a splash of vinegar or washing-up liquid to help it mix, gives surfaces a warm, spiced scent.

Why does it need fewer drops than other oils in the diffuser?

It is a concentrated blend of naturally strong oils, so it reads much stronger per drop than something like Lavender. One or two drops is a sensible starting point.

Does it mark surfaces or fabric?

Cinnamon and clove can mark light fabric or plastic if applied neat, so dilute it and test a small area first, especially on anything pale.
