Cypress is steam distilled from the leaf and twig of Cupressus sempervirens, the tall, narrow conifer common across the Mediterranean. The fine, needle-like foliage is cut and distilled fairly quickly after harvest to keep the aroma fresh rather than dry and dusty.

The smell is clean and woody with a fresh, herbaceous edge — closer to a walk through a stand of conifers than to a typical woody perfume oil. It reads sharper and greener than Cedarwood, without tipping into the resinous weight of Frankincense.

It works well as an everyday diffuser oil, on its own or alongside a citrus note for something brighter. A drop or two also blends comfortably with other woods, giving a fuller, more layered aroma than either manages on its own.

Common questions

What does Cypress smell like?

Clean, fresh and woody with a herbaceous edge — closer to a walk through conifers than a typical wood oil.

What does it blend well with?

Citrus oils such as Lemon or Wild Orange sharpen it, and Cedarwood or Douglas Fir deepen the woody side.

Can I use it on my skin?

Yes, diluted with a carrier oil first — the wrists, chest and soles of the feet are common spots.

How many drops should I use in a diffuser?

Three to four is a good starting point; it is a moderate-strength aroma that layers well with others.

How long will a 15ml bottle last?

It is often used alongside other oils rather than alone, so a bottle tends to last a good while for most households.
