What Is the Cologne List?
The Cologne List (Kölner Liste) is run by an independent German laboratory that specialises in testing nutritional supplements for substances banned in competitive sport, as well as ingredients considered harmful to health. Manufacturers submit products for batch testing, and those that pass are added to the list — giving athletes a way to check whether a supplement is free of prohibited substances before they take it.
This matters because supplement contamination is a genuine risk in competitive sport: an athlete can fail a drug test from a contaminated product even if they had no intention of doping. Third-party certification like the Cologne List gives athletes and coaches an independent reference point, separate from the manufacturer's own claims.
